Boost for local sport and recreation

ISRM backs proposed local authority assessment framework

The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) is backing the Audit Commission's revised Local Authority Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) which now includes Sport, Recreation and Play within the newly established Culture Block. These changes are a vital step towards ensuring local community sport is recognised alongside other essential services such as housing and the environment.

The proposed changes require councils to meet minimum standards of service provision to all members of the community across Libraries, Arts, Museums & Heritage, and Sport, Play & Recreation.

ISRM, chief executive, Ralph Riley said: "For too long now sport has been the first thing to come under pressure when spending cuts are made. The standard of many sport facilities around the country have suffered as a result. The newly proposed assessment framework will mean that councils are rated on the quality of their pools, sport centers and pitches something that will help to boost standards and result in more people taking part in sport and rigorous exercise."

The Audit Commission will assess each council on a number of broad themes such as creating healthier, more active communities and delivering value for money.

Riley continued: "Promoting the physical and social benefits of sport has been the driving force behind the Institute since it was established in 1921. We are pleased to see the Audit Commission has realised the positive outcomes of sport and the important role it has to play in creating a vibrant local community with healthier individuals."

The ISRM has already developed a number of performance indicators that could form part of the new CPA and is encouraging its members to support the Audit Commission and make the new framework a success.
