Conference keynote preview - Alan Cutler

‘ACTION CENTRED LEADERSHIP’

John Adair, perhaps the world’s leading authority on leadership development, describes leadership as:

“One of the most fascinating and mysterious subjects in the world.”

In this keynote presentation, Alan Cutler, Chief Executive of Hospitality Leadership Ltd and one of John Adair’s Associates, shares with the audience his own fascination of the subject, whilst also seeking to demystify it, using Adair’s Action Centred Leadership model as the basis of a straight-forward, but comprehensive, approach to leadership development at all levels within a service organisation.

Commencing with an understanding of exactly what leadership is, as opposed to management, and addressing some old leadership chestnuts, such as ‘are leaders born or made?’, he moves on to suggest three approaches to leadership: qualities, situational and functional.

Believing that the functional approach, what leaders actually do to inspire their people, provides the best foundation for effective leadership, Alan explains in some detail how Action Centred Leadership, with its famous three overlapping circles, can be successfully applied by leaders at team, operational and strategic levels.

Alan started working in hotels at the age of 15 and has held posts within the hospitality industry ever since, including: catering officer in the RAF; restaurateur; Head of Hospitality Services at Aston University; and, for the last eleven years, running his own training and consultancy company, Hospitality Leadership Ltd.

He is an authority on leadership within his industry, a subject upon which he speaks professionally and is a published author. He is currently working with John Adair, one of the world’s leading leadership experts, to raise standards of leadership within the international hospitality industry.
