The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management
Mike Hall, Partner, FaulknerBrowns Architects
Good design is important not only in providing carefully planned buildings for ease of management but in order to create a truly uplifting environment in which to participate in physical activity.
Innovation is essential in responding to changing developments in procurement, stakeholder partnerships and user expectation.
Mike will highlight examples of current trends through examples of recent FaulknerBrowns projects including the community high performance centre at Gateshead stadium and pools in Portsmouth and North Tyneside.
Mike is a partner at FaulknerBrowns Architects specialising in sports and leisure with a particular interest in sustainability. Current projects include major university sports projects at Surrey, Galway and Belfast, the specialist white water canoe slalom course for London 2012 and the new sports complex to replace Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium.
Ian McKenzie, Head of Facilities Development, sportscotland
The National Audit of Scotland’s Sports Facilities, a report recently published by sportscotland which looked at the challenges presented by Scotland’s current stock of sports facilities. The audit covered outdoor, golf and indoor facilities (including swimming pools), operated by clubs, schools, further education and commercial sectors as well as by local authorities. This encompasses over 6,000 facilities. As well as estimating the capital cost of bringing them up to, and maintaining them in an acceptable standard, the audit identified a range of factors that all need to be considered in addressing facilities planning and investment for the future.
Taking this study as our starting point and Glasgow’s pending bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games this paper will move on to examine just what we should be providing in our new build sport and recreation provision and just as importantly how we should be building our existing provision up to the mark.
Ian McKenzie is Head of Facilities Development at sportscotland. He has responsibility for directing and developing sportscotland’s work on planning, design, economics and management of sports facilities. Ian is currently working with the team preparing Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Ian McKnight, Associate, Kennedy FitzGerald and Associates Architects
Falls Leisure Centre is an example of a building that sets new standards for sport and leisure centres. Sport is recognised as a good way to promote health, build social capital and encourage social integration. This centre does all of this and looks set to be a regenerative flywheel in a location that has much need of such help.
This new £6.4 million sports facility has been highlighted by the prestigious design award given to the centre by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2005, a mention in the Civic Trust Awards 2006, RIAI Regional Award 2006, RIAI Special Awards for Accessibility and Sustainability and the RSUA for Innovation in Design and Construction.
This brand new multi-purpose centre includes a sports hall, a 25 metre swimming pool with moveable floor, a state-of-the art fitness suite, steam room, sauna, arts and crafts room, a multipurpose room and a dance and aerobics studio. Ian McKnight will describe the philosophy on which the centre has been designed and developed.
Ian joined Kennedy FitzGerald in 2000 and is currently leading a team working on leisure and primary healthcare projects including leisure centres in Clydebank, Belfast and Downpatrick and large health projects in Portadown and Belfast.
Malcolm Graham, Partner, GLR Architects
How will the introduction of the European CEN Standards for swimming pools affect the future design, management and operation of swimming pools?
Malcolm will review these international safety standards, changes in regulations and new legislation which will have a direct impact on the future design of swimming pool facilities in this country.
He will consider the real design challenges, the planning, environmental and constructional issues associated with new build swimming facilities.
Malcolm Graham is a partner with GLR architects and has been designing and building public sector swimming pools and sports centres for over 30 years. He has worked on a number of British and European Standard committees. In recent years he has provided expert witness where swimming pool building defects or personal injuries have resulted from errors in design or construction.
David Morton, Energy Management Consultant
Fast-rising energy prices have added more than £50 million to the annual running costs of the UK’s swimming pools in the last year alone – before the latest 22 per cent price increase announced by British Gas.
Rising energy costs represent one of the biggest challenges facing the sport and recreation industry. How can operators run their sport and recreation facilities more efficiently?
David will examine the latest energy management and conservation initiatives and investigate the potential saving that can be achieved through the improvement to services and controls, building fabric, management of technical systems and awareness and motivation of staff members.
David Morton has been a senior consultant with National Industrial Fuel Efficiency Service (NIFES) since 1995. He has extensive experience in advising industrial and commercial organisations on energy utilisation and new technology. David has worked extensively with clients running energy management training courses.
Chaired by Ralph Riley delegates will have the opportunity to raise any issues with the expert panel of speakers.
Ralph Riley is Chief Executive of the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM). He has over 30 years experience in the management and operation of sport and recreation services and is the UK expert to the Central European Norm Group for the safety of swimming pools.
