Train to Win

Most people think of a career in sport as a professional sports person playing football or tennis. However for school leavers and graduates the sport and recreation industry offers rewarding and exciting career possibilities. Jobs available could include, coach, lifeguard, PE teacher, general manager, fitness instructor or sports development officer - the list is endless.

Opportunities exist at every level, but as with any profession certain skills and qualifications are required if you wish to work up the ladder. That said, a career in sport is one of the few professions where you can gain training and qualifications whilst working.

ISRM provides a wide range of education and development opportunities for all of those involved in the sport and recreation industry, from recreation assistants through to pool plant operators.

School leaver

Most school leavers enter the industry in junior posts as lifeguards or recreation assistants within local sporting faculties working full or part-time. From here students can gain on the job training and qualifications giving them a broad understanding of the recreation industry. Many new employees will be placed on the ISRM Sport and Recreation Operation Certificate as a starting point.

Entering at degree level

Sports related degrees are now common at many universities, with many being vocationally orientated. However prospective graduate are still likely to need work experience in the sector when job hunting. Many of the larger fitness organisations are now running graduate trainee schemes, which provide direct entry into more senior management positions with training provided.
