Sports Equipment to Africa
Dear Member
'Using Sport
to develop teamwork, reduce crime and promote healthier lifestyles'
The ISRM Project
The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) recently raised
awareness of third world countries notably Zambia that are desperately
short of sports equipment. The impact that sport can have on third world
communities is being used in Zambia to tackle issues such as poverty,
crime, AIDS and social inclusion. The ISRM organised the collection of
used sports equipment donated mainly by the public through leisure centres
(as collection points) and managed to fill a 44 ton lorry. This was shipped
out to Zambia and is now being used by organisations such as “Go
Sisters,” the biggest female sports movement in Zambia and “Sport
in Action Zambia”.
Sport has helped develop skills such as teamwork and leadership, and at
the same time has brought communities together, reducing violence and
promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The Isle of Man Project
Manx Sport and Recreation (Isle of Man) were inspired by this, and now
plans are being put in place to send their own lorry load of equipment
across the sea. A fair amount of equipment has already been collected
prior to going public.
Before the project can be officially launched £7,000 in sponsorship
needs to be raised to cover the costs of temporary storage and shipping
of the equipment. There are many benefits to the sponsor through getting
involved.
