The active people survey - six month interim
findings
The Active
People Survey, a survey of adults (16 years and over) participation in
sport and active recreation in England, started in October 2005, and will
finish (with c.356,000 completed interviews) in October 2006.
The survey is being carried out by Ipsos MORI, on behalf of Sport England.
Interim results, (participation and volunteering rates for each Local
Authority in England) based on the first six months data, from October
2005 to April 2006, can be found by clicking on the link below:

Please note:
- These results are the participation and
volunteering rates for each Local Authority. The data that will be used
in the 2006 culture service assessment will be based on participation
and volunteering rates from the results for the full year of the survey,
adjusted by levels of local deprivation as measured by IMD (Index of
multiple deprivation). Please note you will need to add 3% to your rate
before adjusting for deprivation to take into account seasonality factors.
For further information on adjusting results for deprivation, please
contact the Audit Commission:
0207 166 2394, or refer to CPA
- The Harder Test 2006.
- The participation rates presented here
are from data collected between October 2005 and April 2006. On average,
participation rates are expected to be slightly lower than what would
be seen over a full year, due to the effects of seasonality.
- These results cannot be compared directly
with other data (e.g. General Household Survey; Health Survey for England)
– the Active People Survey is a new baseline measure of participation.
- The full results of the Active People
Survey will be available at the end of November 2006, via an innovative
on-line reporting and analysis tool, ‘Active People Diagnostic’.
For more information on how the participation and volunteering indicators
will be applied in the culture service assessment, including the relevant
thresholds and any specific treatment, please visit the Audit
Commission website.
