This three-day course is the essential technical qualification for staff involved in day-to-day pool plant operation, or those responsible for plant management

Course aim

The ISRM National Pool Plant Operators Certificate aims to build on the knowledge provided in the Foundation Certificate. By the end of the course successful candidates will be able to demonstrate achievement of the following learning outcomes:

The design and operation of their own pool plant including the circulation, filtration, disinfection, pH correction and heating of pool water.
How to maintain water that is in 'balance' and which is safe and pleasant to swim in.
The principles of testing pool water and the remedial action required to restore ideal conditions.
Technical requirements for ensuring safe and efficient operation of pool plant
The use of good management and cost effective technologies to save energy

About the qualification

The National Pool Plant Operators Certificate provides the necessary underpinning knowledge to understand the requirements for safe pool plant operation in today's high tech swimming pools. Positioned at Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework, this advanced technical certificate is aimed directly at staff with some previous experience of pool water testing and plant operation.

Candidates who are successful in both the end of course assessment and work-based assignment will receive the National Pool Plant Operators Certificate qualification, valid for three years. Holders of the Certificate will be eligible (together with one year's relevant industry experience) to apply for Associate Membership of ISRM.

Course content

The three day certificate course is broken down into 18 units:

Swimming pool management
Health and safety - the responsibilities of pool operators
Swimming pool hygiene and cleaning
Pollution and infection
Water supplies and treatment
Circulation system
Filtration
Chlorine and hypochlorite chemistry
Disinfection of pool water
pH, alkalinity and balanced water
Water testing and diagnosis
Chemical safety
Chemical delivery and storage
Chemical dosing
Automatic control
Valves
Heating and ventilation
Energy efficient management

Course assessment

To maintain the high regard in which ISRM qualifications are held throughout the industry, the National Pool Plant Operators Certificate includes a comprehensive two-stage assessment system.

The first stage of the assessment procedure takes place on the final day of the course, with a three-part written test including a 50 question multiple choice section and two further visual identification questions which test the candidates' understanding of the key course principles. This written test is assessed externally by ISRM HQ staff.

Upon returning to their workplaces, candidates then complete a detailed work-based assignment. These assignments are returned to the trainer/assessor for grading and internal verification before ISRM headquarters issues certificates.

Is this course right for you?

It is essential that anyone wishing to undertake the National Pool Plant Operators Certificate course is able to demonstrate that they have the following knowledge and experience:

Have a working knowledge of the plant room
Have a knowledge and basic understanding of pool water treatment
Are able to competently carry out the standard range of water tests
Have a basic knowledge of health and safety legislation

The above criteria would be met by having gained the ISRM National Pool Plant Operators Foundation Certificate

Please note: Candidates attending this course without the basic knowledge or experience required will not gain the full benefits offered by the course and will risk the possibility of failing the assessment. No certificates are awarded to candidates who are unsuccessful.

After the course...

ISRM National Pool Plant Operators Certificate courses offer an intensive three day learning experience. Successful candidates will have achieved a qualification at Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework which should be seen as the benchmark for safe and efficient plant operation.
